Calicoan Island is located in Guiuan Eastern Samar the 3rd largest island in the Philippines, GUIUAN has been declared as a TOURIST ZONE last1978. It is hugged by the Pacific Ocean on the east and the Leyte Gulf on the west making it doubly blessed with natural beauty.Its eastern coastline is characterized by miles and miles of interspersed with rugged cliffs& crashing breakers. Little Mangrove Heron, Reef Egret, Brahminy Kite, Crested Goshawk, Samar Pigmy Falcon,Whimbill, Philippine Cockatoo, Racket-tailed Parrots, PacificGolden Plover, Polynesian Tattler, Northern Phalarop, Bonapartes Imperial Pigeon, Tarictic Hornbill, Coletos, Worcesters Hanging Parakeet, Philippine Glossy Starlings, Oriental Cuckoo,
Sharpes Taylor-bird, Phil. Oriole, Large-billed Crow and visits from the Archtic Willow.
There are lagoons and lakes ringed by forest, and some caves.Of the 6 lakes spread the island, the largest is 30 hectares in size.
The virgin forest area would be preserved inside the development and has paths for walking, trekking, Horse-back riding and picnic areas etc. The forest is a monkey habitat and varied species of birds that caught a worldwide attention.
At the northern tip of Calicoan are wetlands like the Everglades, teeming with fish, shrimp and crabs.The coastal waters offer a rich bounty of marine life; euchuema, abalone, ornamental fish, lobster & seashells, yellow fin tuna & blue marlin, lapulapu, also seaweed and pearl farming.
FEASTING

Calicoan Island is readily accessible by land, sea and air.Chartered flights can land in Guiuan airport, a 5 minutes drive to Calicoan. From Manila & Tacloban City, several buses and vans on regular schedules shuttle passengers to Guiuan via a scenic two lane coastal highway which runs past mountains, steep cliffs, distant rock islands and boat-filled bays.
Getting there
Calicoan island is readily accessible by land. The nearby regional capital of Tacloban is only two to three hours away. Several buses and vans regularly shuttle passengers to Guiuan. Tacloban is regularly serviced by scheduled flights from Manila. Alternatively, several bus companies have daily trips to Guiuan from Manila. Travel time is approximately twenty-one hours. Guiuan is also 2 hours away from the provincial capital, Borongan.
Calicoan Island is envisioned to become the surfing capital and a top tourist destination in Eastern Visayas. So far however, progress has been minimal.
